Course Description:
"A writer's work is to witness things" states essayist Edward Hoagland. But how do you write creatively about events and experiences that are personal and important to you without getting too self-absorbed, sentimental, preachy, or narrow? Through in-class exercises, readings, discussion, creative journaling, and homework assignments, students learn to enhance their observation skills, find outward connections to their topic in order to engage readers, filter their topic through their personal truths, and write it artfully on a human, universal level. Some topics for witnessing are memories, the life or dying of a loved one, family history, socio-political or historical events, a specific time or place. (For writers of fiction, poetry, and memoir.) Prerequisite: One previous beginning creative writing course. Enrollment limited to 20 students.
